Cardiology
What is cardiology
Cardiology is a discipline of medicine that deals with disorders of the heart. The field includes medical diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart defects, ischaemic heart disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease and cardiac arrhythmias.
A cardiologist is a doctor who specialises in diagnosing and treating heart disease. In addition to clinical assessment he uses various non-invasive and invasive techniques to make the diagnosis. Non-invasive methods include ECG, Echocardiogram, Exercise tolerance test and Holter monitoring of the heart where as invasive techniques include angiography and procedures to dilate and stent the coronary (heart) vessels. In cases of irregular heart beat, sometimes a pacemaker is inserted which regulates the heart rate.
